The abandoned Alcatraz prison cells are claimed to be haunted by the restless ghosts of the prisoners who stayed there. Ghosts of captives who had been subjected to brutal forms of punishment. So brutal that even the most known criminals’ spirits would be broken.

Infractions would result in the prisoners being taken to the strip cell, where they would remove all of their clothing and spend time there with no lighting, sink, mattress, or toilet.

Sometimes folks in the city will refer to 1140 Royal Street as “the Haunted House” instead. In New Orleans, however, the two are identical. Shows like American Horror Story have made an already iconic site even more notorious. (Spoiler: producers took huge creative liberties, as Hollywood often does.) The majority of the filming took place at the Hermann-Grima House on St. Louis Street, which was perhaps for the best given that the LaLaurie Mansion is said to be cursed.
